Lesson 1 - Systems Approach to Safety

Graphic image of the cover of the FAA's Commercial Airplane Certification Process Study.

A systems approach examines an event from the system level rather than the subsystem or component level. The system consists of the entire airplane, its operating environment, and the organizational factors (processes and people) that affect the system.

During analysis of an event, all components of the system should be taken into account. These include the airplane design, production, materials, tools, equipment, facilities, and software. And just as importantly, the event must also be viewed in light of the airplane's operating/maintenance environment and surrounding organizational and human factors.
